Samsung U800 Review - Editor's Review
6 Sep 2008
The Samsung U800 is a slender and compact mobile phone that measures 9.9 x 46 x 111 millimetres. It is a lightweight, easy-to-carry handset that weighs approximately 89 grams, including a fitted battery. The U800 is a component of Samsung’s sleek collection of Soul Ultra mobile phones that includes the Samsung G400 and the Samsung U900 Soul.
The Samsung U800 is a mobile phone with an appearance that resembles a solid bar design. Housed in a casing that radiates a metallic effect, the Samsung U800 is integrated with a subtle brushed upshot, giving the mobile phone an elegant look. The handset can also be purchased in various colour choices, including soul grey, platinum silver, metallic black, amethyst violet and soul pink.
The Samsung U800 comes with an external TFT display screen which measures 50.8 millimetres. Situated suitably to highlight the mobile phone’s fascia, the TFT screen gives off 2,000,000 vibrant colours at a 240 x 320-pixel screen resolution. The Samsung U800 also offers its users with various screensaver and wallpaper selections. In addition, a wide array of MP3 and polyphonic ring tones can be selected to enliven the mobile phone.
The Samsung U800 works on tri-band network, which covers GSM 1900, GSM 1800 and GSM 900. To aid frequently travelling users in achieving wider mobile phone coverage, the Samsung U800 is powered with HSDPA 2100 technology.
For hassle-free file transfers to or from any compatible device, the Samsung U800 supports wireless Bluetooth technology and has a USB port as an added option. Its integrated EDGE and GPRS technologies guarantee faster transfer rates.
Users who need to go online can access the Internet anytime and anywhere, with the Samsung U800’s internal HTML and XHTM Web browser that operates on WAP 2.0. As it runs on 3G HSDPA, the Samsung U800 can be expected to support faster downloads and more efficient connectivity.
Communication services offered by the Samsung U800 include traditional text messaging, as well as enhanced messaging that works on predictive text. It also allows multimedia video and picture exchanges, and supports mobile e-mail service for those urgent online transactions.
Users of the Samsung U800 can enjoy taking snapshots during those photo-worthy moments through the built-in 3-Megapixel camera, which operates with a powerful LED flash for better lighting even under dark environments. Additionally, the Samsung U800’s integrated camera has an auto-focus feature to better capture those photo subjects. To brush up final photo outputs, users may adjust certain aspects of their captured shots through the camera’s image editor and other photo settings.
For optimum convenience, video footage recording and playback are possible through the QCIF technology integrated with the Samsung U800’s camera. Similarly, final video footage outputs may be tweaked with its video settings. To keep up with the demands of its modern users, Samsung created a second CIF camera for those 3G video calls.
Samsung also caters to music lovers by integrating a music player in its U800 mobile phone. The music player supports common audio formats, namely WMA, MP3, eACC+ and AAC. It is also powered with advanced technology to allow users to download and transfer music files effortlessly. Moreover, the Samsung U800 has a built-in FM radio to keep users tuned in to their favourite radio stations. As the on-device radio operates on RDS, it displays relevant information to keep listeners updated.
Even as it is a practical and sophisticated mobile phone, the Samsung U800 retains its fun aspect. Avid gamers will enjoy the built-in games of the mobile phone, as well as games that may be downloaded to the handset in Java format.
Getting organised is easy using the Samsung U800. As a no-nonsense handset, it offers organiser features such as a phonebook, a calendar, a clock, an alarm, a calculator, a vibration alert and a hands-free speaker for hassle-free mobile phone talks. The Samsung U800 is as good as a mobile office, as it permits document viewing and editing with its Office Viewer and Office Editor that allow documents in traditional Office formats.
Users can opt to store up to 1 Gigabyte of their data files and photos in the Samsung U800. Where more room is needed, the Samsung U800 can utilize a MicroSD card to expand the mobile phone’s memory.
While certain users applaud the Samsung U800 for its functionalities, some have criticized its memory card’s slow downloading and file reading rate.

I recently won a Samsung U800 on the Virgin website. Expecting it to be on Virgin PAYG, I was pleasantly surprised to discover it unlocked! As I was having problems with the keyboard on my Motorola V8 RAZR I swapped my Orange SIM over and got started.
The U800 is the best phone I've ever had. It's small, light, good looking and has good customisable profiles.
On the downside, there are not enough basic ringtones, some of the functions require rather a lot of key presses and even on 12 hour mode the clock will display 0300 in the afternoon! That's all I can fault on this phone. Having been a fan of Motorola RAZR's for ages, my next phone will be a Samsung.

have just got this phone as upgrade from orange to replace my Moto K1. A bit disapointed after reading the glowing reviews about what this phone can do! Sure it does look good but its quite difficult to get to grips with, the instruction booklet runs to about 25 pages while my old Motorola was over 200 long! Result is you are always on the phone to the helpdesk.
what Id love to know is why the guys at the helpdesk have more comprehensive instructions than the owners?
It comes with very little in the way of ringtones, wallpapers, games already loaded. There is no voice comand ( or maybe there is but its in a hidden menu!)
Other than having a bigger built in memory ( K1 has card slot too) Its difficult to see this phone as an "upgrade" from the motorola!
